Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is a 26-episode anime that will begin in spring 2007. It marks the first major series direction by brilliant Gainax veteran Hiroyuki Imaishi, who's known for his very distinctive, hyper-kinetic style of animation.

Story

Set in the future, mankind has lived in vast underground caves for centuries. In the subterranean town of Giha, a boy named Simon makes his living digging away to increase the amount of space to live in. One day, while digging deep, deep into a tunnel, he finds a shining crystalline object, a "core drill". Simon's best friend is a tattooed young man named Kamina, who leads a group called the Gurren gang which is attempting to break through the cave ceiling and return to a place spoken of in legend, the surface. One day, an event happens that changes everything. The cave ceiling breaks and a giant robot falls into the village. Sunlight pours from the hole it left in the ceiling. "There really is a surface to the world!" But there is no time for to think as the giant robot begins to destroy their village. Kamina stans up to face the robot, and his life is saved by a babe from the surface with a really big gun, Yoko.

The main robots in the show are the head, Lagann, piloted by Simon, and the body, Gurren, piloted by Kamina. The two robots combine into one big robot, Gurren Lagann, in the same way as the characters complement one another, "specifically how Kamina lends emotional strength to Simon," according to Imaishi. (Newtype USA 12/06) Kamina is gregarious, driven, and emotionally strong, but doesn't know anything about digging, while Simon is shy, lazy and weak-willed, but a master tunneler.

More information from Newtype:

  • The story has four acts, each charting a different phase of Simon's growth as Kamina leads him out of the underground and into the world on the surface. Up there, Simon will have to fight other face-shaped robots like the Lagann and making new friends.
  • Women play a very small role in the show. Yoko is the only major female character until late in the story, when a girl named Nia shows up. Imaish sez, "I hate to say it, but this show is full-on, balls-to-the-wall, guy-oriented drama... It's pretty tough to find an effective dramatic hook when you bias the storytelling in one direction like [this]..." but he's confident the story will turn out well.
